Co-founder of NEFA and founder of NefaProject, Garold has shaped the practice’s work in private architecture, residential development and masterplanning for more than three decades.
Today he provides creative direction across Nefaproject, focusing on concept, design judgement and the key decisions that define each project.
Garold Mosolov is the founder and Creative Director of Nefaproject. His professional practice began in Moscow, where he co-founded the architecture and design studio NEFA with Dmitry Ovcharov in 1993. In 1999, he established Nefaproject as an independent studio, developing a distinct body of work and long-term relationships with private clients and developers.
Today, Garold continues to shape the creative direction of Nefaproject, with particular involvement in the early stages of a commission — defining the concept, establishing its architectural character and reviewing the key decisions that determine how a project develops.
Garold’s professional education combines engineering and architecture. He graduated from the Moscow Civil Engineering Institute in 1985 and from the Moscow Architectural Institute in 1992.
This dual background has informed his approach throughout his career: architectural ideas are considered together with construction logic, materials, buildability and the practical consequences of design decisions.
NEFA brought together architecture, interiors and design within a single studio at a time when independent architectural practice in Moscow was rapidly changing. Garold’s work during this period developed from individual commissions towards increasingly complex projects and longer relationships with private and development clients.
The establishment of Nefaproject in 1999 marked the development of his own independent line of practice. Over the following years, the studio developed a substantial body of work while retaining direct architectural authorship and close relationships with its clients.
Over the course of his career, Garold has worked with private clients as well as major developers and development organisations, including Metra Development, Donstroy, Capital Group, Russian House of Real Estate and SKIP.
His experience ranges from individual commissions to residential communities and larger development programmes, where architectural identity, housing typologies, public space and the long-term character of a place have to be considered together.
This experience established a way of thinking beyond the individual building — considering architecture as part of a wider system shaped by landscape, infrastructure, development strategy and successive stages of implementation.
Garold’s role is concentrated on the stages where the identity of a project is established: understanding the client’s ambitions, interpreting an often evolving brief, developing the concept, defining spatial organisation and making the design decisions that have the greatest long-term effect.
Many of his commissions have required close and sustained dialogue with the client rather than the execution of a fully predetermined brief. This has made judgement, continuity and direct involvement in the design process central to his way of working.
At Nefaproject today, Garold remains personally involved in concept development and major design reviews, working alongside Egor Mosolov and the wider project team as each commission develops.
In 2006, Garold served on the jury of the international open competition Architectural Opushka, organised in connection with the Opushkino residential development.
In 2010, a Nefaproject country-house interior received an INTERIA Award in the Innovation category for country-house interiors up to 300 m².
As Creative Director, Garold continues to define the studio’s creative direction and remains closely involved in the projects where his experience and judgement have the greatest effect.
Together with Egor Mosolov, he maintains Nefaproject’s senior-led model: the people responsible for the creative and architectural direction of the studio remain directly involved in the commissions they lead.
PUBLICATIONS & MEDIA
Garold Mosolov’s work has been published in architecture and design media since the 1990s. The archive includes projects from the NEFA period, later work by Nefaproject, residential and development projects, professional commentary, awards and competition activity.
